Description

This report has three sections: archaeology, ethnography & history. The archaeological section describes the history of the environment and early cultures in the Mojave, and includes 4 maps and 8 figures showing collections of arrowheads. The ethnographic section describes the paleo-Indian cultures of the Mojave, their social structure and rituals, and includes a 9 page list of the plants and animals used as food and/or materials in this region. The historic section starts by covering travel through the region by Spaniards and Mexicans, the effect of the Gold Rush, and descriptions of geological and railroad surveys of the area. Next, mines, farms and ranches in the area are described, followed by descriptions of early railroad lines and automobile roads. Drawings of petroglyphs are scattered throughout the report. This is a big report (almost 270 pages) covering many aspects of the Mojave (Mohave) desert. The 70 page history of the Mojave is especially well-written.
