When Cameron Coyle was a teen, he loved everything about high school: friends, parties, lunch, basketball, even a few of his classes, but the one thing that Cameron loved the most about Thomas High School was his best friend: Claire. Growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, Cameron and Claire trusted each other with everything and accepted one another's flaws, while they longed to be anywhere but Iowa.  Ten years later, Cameron, now a high school teacher outside of Minneapolis, has found himself on the wrong side of a break-up, left with a job that he despises, and in a seriously downward spiral. Cameron is all but ready to leave the profession of teaching when an old friend calls with a job proposition... at his old high school in his hometown. Cameron is about to find out that the formative years Cameron loved so much, haven't changed much since he left them, and that his time behind the desk, isn't all that different from his time in front of it.  And then of course, there's Claire...
