Description

In the mid 1800 s a German immigrant and a Jewish lawyer begin a trading post on a Spanish land grant the German has acquired. He is soon challenged on ownership by a rough character in a brutal fight that ends by his killing the squatter with his bare fists. A son of the dead man writes a monologue laying a responsibility of vengeance on a future generation. Great grandsons of the two immigrants 150 years latter have inherited their bank and law practices. Another grandson of those frontier men lives in the town named after the old German, Wernerville, Texas. A pastor, called to the town church, becomes friends with the two. He is assaulted and robbed by two rogue cops hired by that grandson, a local businessman. His wife-abuse involves the pastor and a new friend of the pastor, lawyer and banker, a cool, sharp detective. Several mysteries engulf the main characters in an intriguing, convoluted plot, finally focusing on a voluptuous woman who cons away a billion dollars, on hire. Through diligent detective work, the lawyer s instinct followed by genealogical research uncovers the decades old killing, behind a major part of the troubles. The story moves toward a climax, and a prologue with a wonderful, surprising coincidence.
