Live Coals: Memoir of a Kentucky VISTA

Live Coals is the memoir of a year spent by the author serving as a VISTA in Eastern Kentucky. The story describes the experiences through which she matured from a naive coed into a seasoned volunteer. Together with a young woman from Oregon and a young man from Massachusetts, Ms. Buckingham lived among the people in the holler formed by John Little's Creek. Encounters such as a granny raid, community confrontation and grassroots organizing helped the author to appreciate a different culture and to question longheld assumptions.
