Description

This is the original and unabridged text of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived.

Mark Twain, in his lecture notes, proposes that a sound heart is a surer guide than an ill-trained conscience and goes on to describe the novel as ...a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat .

Twain began his career writing light, humorous verse, but evolved into a chronicler of the vanities, hypocrisies and murderous acts of mankind. Twain was a master at rendering colloquial speech and helped to create and popularize a distinctive American literature built on American themes and language.

"Mark Twain gave pleasure real intellectual enjoyment to millions, and his works will continue to give such pleasure to millions yet to come ... His humor was American, but he was nearly as much appreciated by Englishmen and people of other countries as by his own countrymen. He has made an enduring part of American literature." President William Howard Taft
