When a little old man is found dead in his own home it seems to DS Dave Slater he's simply been the victim of a tragic accident. Perhaps it's just a sign of the times with so many older people now living alone. Sadly, in this case, there isn't even a living relative to arrange his funeral. Then one or two strange things happen at the old man's now empty house, and Slater has to reconsider his original conclusion and ask some fresh questions.

It soon becomes obvious that someone is looking for something, so perhaps this was just a burglary that went wrong. But when the dead man's solicitor's office is broken into just days later Slater can't help but wonder what could a lonely little old man be hiding, and why is someone so desperate to find it? Then, when seedy-looking journalist Geoff Rippon arrives in town, Slater knows they've stumbled upon something much bigger than he had ever suspected.

And then there's Florence, a ghost-like figure, who's occasionally seen around town in the early hours. Everyone assumes she's just a harmless old lady who lives rough somewhere near town, but could she actually be the key to this whole mystery?
