Utopia

Scholars are divided about whether Thomas More meant for Utopia to be a critique of European society by use of a contrasting perfect system, or a firm dismissal of any notion that utopian systems were practical in a European context, or a subtle satire of nobility, or a reaffirmation of the supremacy of Catholicism. There are aspects of all of these themes in Utopia. Whatever Thomas More’s motives, Utopia is a fascinating piece of literature, full of both progressive ideas and impractical notions ripe for debate. Judging by the continued popularity of utopian ideals and dystopian warnings, the concepts introduced in Utopia are likely to remain prominent themes in our culture for the foreseeable future.
