A Soldier of Fortune Goes to School

I’m Gryffon, an immortal warrior elf who was sentenced to four thousand years of community service for a prank. Yes, a prank. Don’t get me started on how unfair life can be. At any rate, part of my punishment is to keep a journal of my good deeds. After centuries of ending wars, suppressing revolutions, freeing the oppressed and oppressing the oppressors, I got sent to a real hell—a failing inner city high school in New York. Technically, I’m a “resource officer.” In reality I’m a glorified babysitter to a bunch of loser truants who have no idea how good they have it. In any other realm their only future would be as cannon fodder. But I can see why my unique skills are needed here—this neighborhood is a war zone. Don’t expect any mushy emotional glyp in this journal. This isn’t some sap story about a tough guy who learns to love a bunch of plucky misunderstood youngsters. I don’t do mush. I get a job, I do it. But I do, occasionally, bend the rules a teeny bit to get the job done. Heh heh heh. Boom!
