Flight of the Throstle: WBA in the early 1990's

The early 1990’s is a neglected period in West Bromwich Albion’s recent history. With the exception of the Ardiles year, the whole decade is ignored though during that era of low technology, fences, terraces, smoking and 3pm kick-offs, the Baggies built key foundations of our current lofty status. Every Albion season has moments worthy of recording for posterity, both on and off the pitch. Football is far more than an hour and an half of passive entertainment, it’s about people, family, places, history, social culture – it’s a way of life. Flight of the Throstle aims to fill the 1990’s gap before precious emotional memories fail completely. Simon Wright (author of ‘West Brom’s Cult Heroes’ and ‘West Brom’s Greatest Games’), examines how Albion slipped into the League’s third tier and escaped Phoenix-like, only after two years of intense struggle, thus taking the all-important first step towards the Premier League. His narrative is weaved around his own first-hand experiences leavened with numerous humourous anecdotes and supported by numerous quotes and memories from players, management, Chairmen and supporters. Flight of the Throstles, originally an e-book, had its first print edition in 2014. This updated version includes additional material and – for the first time - a variety of images of which some have never previously been published.
