A Shared Aesthetic: Artists of Long Island's North Fork

Since its settlement in the seventeenth century, the North Fork of Long Island has attracted artists. By the mid-nineteenth century, they were exploring the area in depth, visiting-and painting-its hamlets and untouched landscapes. Enchanted by the area's combination of farms and villages, harbors and coastline, many of them made it their home. A Shared Aesthetic, Artists of Long Island's North Fork includes some 275 painters, printmakers, and sculptors who lived, worked, and exhibited in the area, from members of the National Academy and products of the European academies, to homegrown and self-taught artists. The book documents a rich artistic and cultural tradition through letters, diaries, and photographs, as well as the artworks themselves. This is the first comprehensive resource on the artists of the North Fork, their homes and studios, their complex relationships, and their impact on the community.
