Fifty Years in Brazil: A Sampler of SIL Work, 1958-2008

Samples of the products of fifty years of SIL International's work in Brazil range from material which is out-of-print to articles which are available now for the first time in this volume. The contributions include:

• Language typology: first documentation of a language with OSV basic word order
• Analysis of the lexical structure of paragraphs
• Application of discourse analysis to translation
• An autosegmental analysis of pre-stopped nasals
• A bilingual dictionary with entries culturally contextualized
• Documentation of a moribund language
• Description of marriage and residence patterns of an ethnic group five years after ongoing contact with the outside world

• Excerpts from a Portuguese phonological analysis textbook
• Description and analysis of traditional knowledge transmission and the impact of formal education in an ethnic group

NOTE: Approximately half of the book is in Portuguese. All chapters except the bibliography include both an English and a Portuguese introduction by the editors.
