Rape of Florida: Twasinta's Seminole

The most talented and the most significant of all the African-American poets between Phillis Wheatley and Paul Laurence Dunbar was Albery Whitman. The Rape of Florida is a long poem telling the tragic love story of a Mickasukie chief, and the young daughter of a Spanish nobleman. But more than just a love story, it is a powerful, forthright call for self-determination and freedom by a Black poet.
