Description

This Leader's Guide will show you how to start a peer helping program and how to use the Peer Helper Handbook to teach peer helping and peer tutoring skills. It contains training material designed to be used with both middle school and high school students.

Twenty training units cover the full array of peer helping and peer tutoring skills. Each unit can be presented to a group of trainees in a forty-minute session. Each unit has one or more exercises. All exercises are intentionally planned to have trainees work together in cooperative learning teams, either in pairs, triads, or small groups. Learning together cooperatively helps trainees develop social interest and confidence in working with others, both of which are necessary to the role of "peer helper."

Peer helping programs are exciting and meaningful, both to the students who participate and to the leaders. The goal of this guide is to help make your program a successful and rewarding experience both for the students you train and for their peers.
