Blood Component Visual Inspection Guide

A critical part of safe blood administration is the visual inspection of units and segments to distinguish between normal and abnormal components before transfusion. This Guide is intended as a vital tool for any individual who handles blood units in the blood center, component preparation or testing laboratory, or hospital. Originally developed by a team at the American Red Cross, the Guide has been endorsed and produced by AABB. It is full of color photographs that depict normal and abnormal appearances of whole blood, red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. It also provides definitions and causes of numerous conditions that may negatively affect blood components.
