Introduction to the Mathematics of Demography

This text is listed on the Course of Reading for the EA-1 Examination of the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries. This text strikes a happy compromise between qualitative and quantitative analysis, in that there is much material that is purely descriptive, but also an extensive survey of the foundational mathematics required in much of the work done by demographers. The mathematical content is presented by easily understood descriptive narrative. It incorporates data from U.S. and Canadian national censuses and national life tables and also presents dynamic population projection. Examples are drawn from North American applications and studies, and each chapter contains an extensive set of problems for the reader to solve.
