He is author of nearly a dozen books on history and exploration. He is also famous for his patronage of exploration in Antarctica. From 1896 on Markham threw his whole heart into the promotion of Antarctic exploration, securing funds by urgent appeals to public and private sources. Markham was responsible for selecting Robert Falcon Scott to lead the successful expedition to Antarctica. In later South Polar achievements he took little interest until Captain Scott planned the expedition in the Terra Nova in 1910, when his former ardor was rekindled. This veryscarce bibliography was prepared to accompany the Review of British Geographical Work during the Century 1789-1889. Under the various divisions and subdivisions the entries are arranged in chronological order. Originally published in 1893 by the Royal Geographical Society, this title is very scarce.
