EVANGELICAL COCKROACH is a collection of 39 essays by the controversial Jack Woodford, who was mainly know for his softcore sex novels published in the 40s and 50s. These short-short diatribes were first collected in 1929 and show what an iconoclast the author was, even when he was young and full of piss and vinegar. Richard A. Lupoff's excellent introduction places Woodford in his time and society and shows why he was one of the most innovative and prescient literary men of the past century. He pushed for self-publishing back when it was expensive and difficult. Times have changed and not just with publishing. The way men and women think about each other has changed and with these 39 tidbits of morality (1920s-style) we can decide for ourselves if the change was for the better -- or worse.
