Author Venkataraman Gopalakrishnan lists J.R.R. Tolkien as his favorite author, for Tolkien's descriptive style of writing and magical characters. Gopalakrishnan found inspiration for this, his first novel, while doing a series of character development writing exercises on a coach trip home from Malaysia to Singapore.
