Description

Two middle school boys explore the Niagara Escarpment in a rural area near their home. They find a cave at the bottom of a crevice and use it as a secret hideout until becoming trapped by a rock fall. Learning from their environment and from the wild inhabitants of the cave, a colony of bats, they escape after two desperate days of darkness. This experience leads the boys into a new adventure involving a hermit, an old man living in a derelict building that once was a water-powered sawmill, who has rigged several devices to discourage unwanted visitors. The story takes place in modern times, but touches on life in olden days. There are references to moral values throughout the book, which also encourages respect for certain aspects of nature and being mindful of things we can learn from our environment.
