As the Family Goes, So Goes Everything; It Is Up to Us is written for a number of audiences, especially those who have been victimized by chronic abuse or trauma. The book is designed to stop systematic abuse by helping teachers prepare lessons that promote critical thinking and encourage discussion by counselors and educators, as well as preparing clerics to help their congregations. There are two primary objectives: One is to have abused and distressed people know they can have happy lives with healthy relationships by using proven methods of reconstruction. The second is to have readers become incensed with the fact that recent psychological knowledge and skills are being restricted, even withheld from many citizens by insurance companies and lobbied government officials. The author believes we are living at a time of cultural conflict in which a privileged few are attempting to deny many their fundamental rights. The essentials for survival are being refused, including jobs, education, homes, food, earned retirement and health care. Retired psychotherapist Dr. James T. McMahon dedicates this book to his beloved wife, Rose Marie. He offers the stories of 50 real people, whose identities are confidential to back up his points. Their stories and emotional experiences will resonate with many readers, as Dr. McMahon provides psychotherapy advice to help these victims. A dual Irish and American citizen, Dr. McMahon grew up in Chicago and now calls New Bern, North Carolina home.
