Description ▲
This book is intended as a graduate text on fluid mechanics for students in applied science and engineering. It develops the basic tools for the description of flow phenomena and establishes the fundamental equations derived from first principles in spatial and material descriptions. Emphasis is placed on laminar flows of incompressible, viscous and inviscid fluids with significant vorticity. The book consists of two parts, the first covering most of the kinematics, and the second the dynamics of fluid flow with selected applications. Each chapter contains analytic examples to illustrate the theory presented and some sections also provide detailed numerical applications that are inaccessible to analytic treatment. Each chapter concludes with problem sets requiring analytic and/or modest numerical work for their solution. Basic knowledge of a programming language such as FORTRAN, C or C++ or MATLAB is required for some of the problems. Detailed solutions to the problems are collected in an appendix.
