Aquilina C. Howell's story is one of courage, trials and triumph. It chronicles the life of a pioneering black educator, who overcame incredible odds to become a respected leader and educator of great renown. Howell arose from humble beginnings to become Tallahassee's first black woman assistant school superintendent. Her masterful ability to work with people of all races and sects would prove invaluable. During her esteemed career, she presided over numerous heated meetings with black and white parents and was celebrated for easing the Leon County School District through the delicate process of school desegregation as she helped sell the change in the black community.
