While on their honeymoon in the Soviet Union, Fred Yocum and his wife Caroline decided to concentrate on seeing the United States. Eventually all members of the family (and one Cabbage Patch doll as well) were in all fifty states, Fred was in every city with a population of 37,500 or more and in every county in the US. The most unusual aspect in raising their family was the fact that their only son, Stephen, had multiple disabilities but also a winsome personality and a desire to savor life. He was both a delight and a challenge to the time of his death on March 26, 1999, at the age of 27. With their children (and the Cabbage Patch doll) in tow, they go about their expansive trip with gusto. Along the way they stop at Major League Baseball parks to watch the professionals play out Fred and his son's favorite sport.
