This book gives an insider's view of the major changes within the railroad industry by tracing Fred Yocum's career from 1967 to 2008. It is the second volume of his trilogy entitled Finer than a Frog's Hair Split Three Ways. The earlier volume covered his early life, family, travels (including his being in every county in the United States), and baseball (Way 1). The subsequent volume will cover his spiritual journey (Way 3).
Fred has written and laid out the book so as to be easy to pick up and read from cover to cover or to concentrate on particular events or elements, such as stories or management wisdom. The chapter headings and the extensive index are laid out to assist the topical reader.
Among the interesting experiences in Fred's career were his being in charge of the railroad's responsibility for a campaign train for President Reagan and his overseeing an extensive monitoring of Conrail when he was Vice President -- Operations and Marketing for the United States Railway Association (USRA).
Through the pages of this book, you'll get to meet many of the outstanding railroaders of the second half of the Twentieth Century, including Stanley Crane, John Barriger, Hays Watkins, Jervis Langdon, Larry Provo, and Ed Burkhardt. However, some will find the most interesting parts of the book anecdotes concerning various situations along the way.
