Description

The Correspondence is a breathtaking achievement, being a transcription of some 923 letters to and from Lord Overstone between 1804 and 1883. Overstone maintained that he had destroyed all his correspondence before he died, and Professor O'Brien's important discovery of some 350 of them in 1964 was significant for understanding an enigmatic figure, highly important in nineteenth-century currency debates, and an active director of the Bank of England for over fifty years.

Correspondents include J. R. McCulloch, Robert Torrens, and George Warde Norman. With biographical sketches of all named people included in the numerous footnotes, plus introductions, appendices and indices, this collection forms an important source for the understanding of ninenteenth-century banking and political economy in Britain. Originally published in 1971 Thoemmes Press is pleased to make this important out-of-print scholarly work available once more. It will prove invaluable to all academic libraries with departments in British economic history, finance and banking.

--first collected edition of Overstone's correspondence, including letters believed to have been destroyed
--scholarly new introductory material, plus biographical sketches, appendices and indices
--important for economic historians and in particular, British banking and finance in the nineteenth century
