Shir-Ella: Remembrances of Two Sisters Evacuated from London to a Norfolk Village--WW II, 1939-1945

In just three days from September 1, 1939, more than a million and a half people were taken from England's towns and cities into the country, exiled from their homes by the threat of massive bombing raids. One million of those were children carrying gas masks and suitcases of clothes. The streets of London and other big cities were strangely quiet and deserted. Mothers had no children to call in from play. The Government had played the part of Pied Piper and for those million children it was day their normal lives came to an end for five long years.
