Description

Recent historic and cartographic research, coupled with analysis of the archaeological materials recovered from sites along the entire south shore of Lake Erie, has called into considerable question earlier specualtions concerning the specific ethnic and linguistic affiliation of many of th elatest prehistoric occupations in the differing regions from southeastern Michigan, west nearly to Niagra Falls. The research and excavation reports presented in this volume attempts to place all of the late prehistoric sites in northeastern Ohio into perspective vis a vis the Whittlesey tradition, which describes the prehistoric population responsible for the distinct archaeological grouping which occupies this region. It includes discussion of previous investigations, the environmental background and stratigraphy, and analysis of ceramics, stone artefacts, bone and antler remains, faunal remains, ethnobotany, and human skeletal remains.
