This is the first volume of a two volume set.  It contains hundreds of high quality photos illustrating the written history of Port Arthur, Texas' first century.  This collaboration features more than a dozen writers, historians and educators with lifetime experience on the subject of Port Arthur, Texas.This volume had wide community support which created a tidal wave of response from the community in the form of additional photos previously not available to public history archives.Volume One is organized by topics of high importance to Port Arthur: Native Americans, early settlements, civil war era, religion, ethnic diversity, Pleasure Island, notable Port Arthurans, government, education, business, oil and industry, plus major events including hurricanes and disasters.Due to the response to this volume, a second volume was published the following year containing a timeline, hundreds of newly discovered photos and an index covering both volumes. Both library quality volumes contain archival quality glossy paper bound in a deluxe hard cover.  Photos have been restored and enhanced for publication by Photographer/Publisher Michael Cate.
