Description

As a field of scholarly research, Sino-Japanese studies has grown considerably over the past twenty years, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Joshua Fogel, the editor of this and two previous EastBridge volumes on the subject. Throughout the course of history, Chinese cultural influences including books, art, and religious materials, have flooded Japan with ideas and values. The Japanese reception and resopnse to the Chinese has been well-examined and documented. The Chinese view of the Japanese during this period of interchange has received less scrutiny. This volume helps ameliorate that situation.
This volume is divided into two major sections: Part 1 covers material on Neo-Confucianism, Literature, and Politics (1600-1900) while Part 2 discusses Scholarship, Politics, and the Arts (1850-1950).
