Description

The second volume in the series covers elasto-plastic soil mechanics, the application of finite element methods in agricultural soil mechanics, soil compaction, and sensors and controllers for primary drivers and soil engaging implements. Chapter 1 deals with the concept of stress, strain, constitutive relationships, and linear and nonlinear material behavior before discussing critical-state soil mechanics in detail. Recent developments in unsaturated soil mechanics are summarized. Chapter 2 covers the application of the finite element method to solve soil-machine and soil-plant interaction problems such as large strains and/or displacements, gap elements, interface elements, and solution techniques for nonlinear problems. Chapter 3 covers recent advances in the measurement, prediction, and management of soil compaction. Chapter 4 covers variability in selected soil properties, sensors for real-time control and field mapping. It concludes with the current state of robotic farming systems.
