Rock n roll is Jimmy Proudfoot s religion. When he forms a band with his workmate, Mac, he dreams that it will be his escape from the Post Office and bedsitland. He represses an ex-art student urge to draw caricatures of his enemies and concentrates on writing songs, but as the first gig approaches he starts to have serious doubts.Mac has invited his manager Tamara along, and like all the other girls she appears to be falling for his charm. Jimmy is unable to bond with the band s rhythm section, the uncommunicative Lynch brothers. His neighbours complain whenever he plays his guitar, his sister is threatening to attend, and the very thought of playing in front of an audience makes him feel sick.
