FROM THE INTRODUCTION. ..Huts and tents, caravans and treehouses are all designed to give the essential comforts of shelter and protection, but without the responsibilities and obligations of a full-time home. If they are permanent, cabins and shacks usually reflect the environment in which they are constructed, with walls of local stone, woods, grass or clay. As they are built from materials found in the vicinity they are naturally sympathetic to the landscape and in time, when the patina of age and a covering of moss and lichen dulls any newness, they almost become part of it. ..If they are mobile, these types of dwellings are specifically designed to be lightweight and portable. Many have historic roots and are copies or reinterpretations of the homes of nomadic tribespeople, or those whose occupations called for them to go from one area to another. ...
"Man's possessions are his burdens" - American Shaker motto...Another change of use was facilitated when American Wallace "Wally" Byam founded the Airstream Company in the 1930's. He took the riveted aluminum body construction more commonly seen in aircraft of the time and used it to create the rounded body for a vacation vehicle that provided a lightweight, stylish and comfortable "home from home" for a family on the move. It is said that the adolescent Byam had worked as a shepherd and had spent nights in a shepherd's hut with his sleeping bag and a gas stove, giving him the idea for creating a more comfortable travelling trailer. ..
