Hong Kong Then charts the changes in Hong Kong since 1948 as it gradually assimilates aspects of the Western world into its traditional culture developing a new identity and growing into the huge metropolis that it is today. After the Second World War, Hong Kong was to some extent still continuing with its pre-war way of life. Hong Kong Then describes the society and culture, its people, its physical environment and the colonial presence there during its formative years, showing how Westerners and Chinese lived in Hong Kong when conditions were vastly different to what they are today.
