When we first meet Sable Gaines she is attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where she admits to being there solely for the benefit of her mother-an overbearing elitist-and her best friend, Mikeen. She vehemently denies having a problem - at least not a drinking problem.
While at the meeting, Sable confesses to having frequent encounters with her father, who just happens to have been dead for nearly a month. Sable offers this information up freely-simply trying to make sense of the world through what is tangible and what is not. But she quickly begins to wonder what the others at the meeting must think of her while deciding what she thinks of herself.
Through Separation we come to meet a preacher who tells Sable that she is one of the rare individuals able to see into the spirit world-in fact, according to her Uncle, Tico Gaines, it is a family trait that her grandmother possessed as well. However, even more amazingly, Sable finds she can communicate with inanimate objects. As a result of her father's death, Sable and her Uncle Tico find themselves investigating the murder along with the local police department.
Will Sable's unique powers serve to aid in the investigation, or will they reveal too much and leave Sable a wreck, simply looking for her next drink?
