Description

What do we mean by urban structure and form? Who decides what form a city should take, what structure it should assume? The layout of a city is informed and linked to its development and renewal. The structures, forms, contours and divisions we find in a city are often the result of immense technical planning. Yet often these forms quickly escape the original conditions of their creation and end up being constraints. If in the past a harmonious relationship existed between urban planners, a city, and its inhabitants, today, the idea of development is more challenging than ever. Indeed, urban planning is full of theoretical and practical difficulties. This book explores the gap between urban theory and practice, and defines the problematic of urbanism with the following question: are technicians capable of contributing to the development of cities not just stretching it into a sprawl or increasing the number of buildings within its ever-expanding frontiers? And are the inhabitants themselves capable of adapting to the changing lifestyles and economic exigencies of a growing city? Panerai and Mangin skillfully probe these questions, drawing from official reports, analysis and treaties on urban planning starting from the early 20th century. They comment on the most significant examples of city planning, examining the contours, divisions, lots and structures one finds in cities and their relationship to the localized space that they occupy.
