Description

Even though only a fragment, the bronze statue of a satyr in ecstatic dance is one of the most admired works of Greek art. Found in 1998 stuck in the net of an Italian fishing boat fishing between Sicily and Tunisia, the bronze was retrieved from the 480 meter deep sea floor and carefully restored. However, it remains controversial in archaeological research. Bernard Andreae, former director of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome until 1995, has eight new arguments for the proposition that the bronze is the very famous masterpiece of the late-classical sculptor Praxiteles. Reconstruction drawings from the hand of the renowned German sculptor Manfred Sihle-Wissel and new photographs show the sweeping, swirling motion of the ebrious follower of Dionysos. Technical investigations and comparisons with other works by the famous sculptor from Athens show how closely related in style, but also how unique and outstanding the piece is. German text.
