Die Grenzen der Gemeinsamkeit: Deutsche, Letten, Russen und Juden in Riga 1860-1914 (Kritische Studien zur Geschichtswissenschaft)

This book analyses the causes and problems of multiethnic societies taking the Baltic city of Riga as an exemplary case study. What could integrate between Germans, Latvians, Russians and Jews while ethnicity increasingly separated these groups? By looking at local politics, the rich association network as well as the cultural practices of the different groups the author explains the reasons for consensus as well as for conflict. A final comparison with other multiethnic cities in Europe sheds new light on the historical causes, problems and chances of multiethnic coexistences in Europe.
