Description

During the burning of coal for power generation enormous volume of oxides of nitrogen, carbon, sulfur and huge amount of fly-ash discharged from power plants leading to a number of environmental problems. A very little academic literature exists on how to manage or control these pollutants in the surrounding areas of an Indian coal-fired power plant. Electrostatic precipitators are no longer adequate, as Indian coals are having high ash content, high ash resistivity and low sulfur content. This book, therefore, provides an alternative eco-friendly management practices to control the pollutants at the source and in the field. At the source two experiments were conducted in wet scrubbing of flue gases with water and limed water. The latter was found effective. In the field useful plant species were identified to control fugitive losses of particulates from TPP ash dykes which have useful management implications. Also APTI and EPI of some important plant species were calculated to recommend species for green belt development. This book will be especially useful to professionals and students of environmental science/technology/engineering or any one else connected to environment.
