Description ▲
German-born photographer Erwin Blumenfeld began his career within Dada circles in 1930s Berlin and Paris. Later, he was able to garner success as a famed fashion photographer by working for US magazines as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and pioneered forms of modern advertising in his prints for cosmetics. Blumenfeld's disdain for mainstream conformity was uncompromising and infused his work with an experimental energy. With daring in-camera optical effects and precise control of lighting and processing, he was a technical genius, never leaving any detail to chance. Working mainly in color, his innovative style and legacy continue to shape contemporary photography to this day.
