Description

Bacteremia is the presence of viable bacteria in the blood stream and consequently may cause the invasion of cardiovascular system. The consequences of this event can range from trasient, self-limiting infection to the one that is life-threating. Usually the bacteria are carried in to blood stream by the flow of lymph from an area of infection in the tissue. Infection of the cardiovascular system can have devasting effects because infectious agents become systemic, they can be carried to all parts of the body producing disease in one or more vital organs or causing the circulatory system itself to stop functioning. Bloodstream infections are associated with significant patient morbidity and mortality. Despite important progresses in treatment and prevention of infectious diseases, they are considered as leading causes of death for millions of people in developing countries. Bacteremia has an increasing trend in some region of the world. Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns should guide the choice of empiric antimicrobial regimens for patients with bacteremia.
