Melancholie - zwischen Attituede und Diskurs (Aventiuren)

The term "melancholy" defies clear definition. In the historical variability and in the modern omnipresence of the melancholy-concept remains a great potential that this collection of writings is dedicated to tapping into. The formulation between Attitude and Discourse demarcates the space between rhetorical stylization and academic argumentation in which melancholy has always been situated and from which the concept continues to derive its dynamic role not only in the history of artistic creativity but in the history of ideas as well. The broad spectrum of articles collected in this book reveals how melancholy was conceptualized in Medieval and Early-Modern literature, medicine and philosophy and enables us to discover new historical frameworks and to describe patterns of encoding melancholy that had not been previously considered. Furthermore, the investigation of these literary subjects and historical discursive formations guided by an interdisciplinary cultural studies approach guarantees that a whole range of new insights will emerge.
