Description

This novel narrates in a melancholy tone the lifetime tragedy of Jude, a rural young man. Although Jude is diligent and fond of learning and thinking, he is locked out of the door of university all the time. The beautiful and clever heroine Sue possesses independent personality and ideology, despising common customs and fossilized religion. The love between Jude and Sue is not allowed by the church and the customs. As Jude fails to realize his aspirations and find a job as well as has no means to borrow money, his eldest son feels hopeless and hangs himself with other younger brothers and sisters. Suffering this tragic change, Sue finally yields to destiny and the church and leaves her beloved Jude. Here the free idea and independent personality are destroyed and abandoned. Jude drinks to excess all day long and falls ill for unhappiness. He dies unavenged less than thirty.
