This study reveals the unique characteristics of Gorakpur during the period of its transition, roughly 1750-1830. Based on the juxtaposition of the trasition debate, colonial discourse and orientalism, an attempt has been made to redefine history and focus on new ways of studying economic history. What emerges are striking growht patterns and agricultural expansion and economic development in Gorakpur.
