Description

For the reader familiar with the work of Luis Goytisolo, The Investigations and Conjectures of Claudio Mendoza is a book that seems at first to be unusual. But this is only in appearance, as some of its predominant characteristics, the game of mirrors, pseudonyms, fictions that conceal other fictions, as well as its sense of humour (in this case its boundless), are traces that in some ways are alien to Luis Goytisolo. Claudio Mendoza, theoretical author of the first and last of the stories brought together here, becomes the main character of the work upon analysing, in his role of conscientious erudite, not only the content of the rest of the stories and the personality of their author, Luis Goytisolo, but also the process itself that resulted in the publication of the book by Anagrama. In a hypothetical meeting between Marx and Lenin, that factor would have predominated in their discrepancies? Would it have been the ideological factor or the incompatibility of their respective personal conditioning? How would an incipient professional of seduction explain the failure of a one night stand on the beach to himself? What should the characteristics be of a novel that is trying to leave the milestones Joyce achieved behind him? These questions, among others, are those which Claudio Mendoza examines, always starting from the real existence of the analyzed text.
