En 1894, en la ciudad francesa de Varbourg, aparece muerta Cecile Montaine en las escaleras de su casa. The body is in the hospital chapel and there meet father Abigore, Montaines family priest, the sheriff and the doctor of corpses, Albert Karno. The doctor discovers, out of the nostrils of the young woman, a type of mite unknown so far. Then the investigation begins.
