Ernst and Ronald are two middle-aged men who don't know one another but share the same boring, empty lives. Everything changes with the arrival of a letter and diary describing the relationship between their ancestors and an unfinished duel from the 18th century. Ernst and Ronald decide to contact one another and travel to Schiermonnikoog, known as the “Island of the Gray Monksâ€Â—a faraway placed scarcely inhabited by humans. After studying the history of their ancestors, Gorin and Willem, they decide to finish the duel. This fable about death, abandonment, freedom, and forgiveness unfolds in a world of stunning confessions and outcomes.
