Divided into two balanced groups of stories, this collection presents some of the greatest fiction written by Peruvian poet César Vallejo. The avant-garde stories in the beginning of the book intertwine two common themes—motherhood and death—in innovative ways. In contrast, the stories in the second half follow a more conventional format, each containing a beginning, middle, and end, and describe life in the Peruvian fields.
