"Not all Spiritists have had the opportunity to peruse the pages of La Revue Spirite, the journal of psychological studies edited by Allan Kardec and published under his guidance from January 1858 through April 1869. Nonetheless, besides the doctrinal texts and those having to do with mediumistic phenomenology, the twelve volumes of Revue Spirite are filled with highly valuable instructions and explanations, the product of the Codifier himself, addressed especially to Spiritists and the Spiritist Movement. They contain judicious guidelines that excel in elegance, clarity and correctness of style, many of them aimed at forming Spiritist centers and societies, which were multiplying in France and in other countries at the time. Kardec’s guidelines are so highly current and appropriate that we could take them as having been written today. In selecting from among them and putting the selections in a single convenient volume, it is our intention to make available to present-day Spiritists, especially Spiritist leaders and workers, the essence contained in Revue Spirite. With the same purpose in mind, we have also included a few articles from Posthumous Works, the last of which wonderfully sums up Kardec’s thought regarding charity as meant by Jesus."
