Description

Established in 1987, Tocharian and Indo-European Studies (TIES) is an international scholarly journal with contributions in English, German, and French. The journal's central topic is formed by the two closely related languages Tocharian A and B, attested to in Central Asian Buddhist manuscripts dating from the second half of the first millennium AD. The journal focuses on philological and linguistic aspects of Tocharian, and its relation with the other Indo-European languages. This volume contains 11 articles by some of the world's leading specialists on Tocharian, including an important article by the late Werner Winter, which was one of the last to be written by this outstanding scholar. Contents: nekrolog over Ji Xianlin (1911-2009) * three additions to the Tocharian B aviary * the Tocharian B word for 'solstice'? * a late alternative to the mihi est construction in Tocharian B * Tocharian AB kwar- 'to grow old' * silk in Ancient Kucha: on the Toch. B word kaum found in the documents of the Tang period * notes on some Tocharian Vinaya fragments in the London and Paris collections * speaking on tongue - the Tocharian B nouns with an oblique singular in -a * Tocharian A maska- 'be difficult' * vowel lengthening before distinctively voiced (formerly glottalized?) consonants in Tocharian.
