Description

This study documents the attempts of a Dutch team to reconstruct an ensemble of ten nearly life-size terracotta statues of gods and goddesses that once adorned the roof of the Late Archaic (5th century BC) sanctuary of Mater Matuta at Satricum south-east of Rome and tries to shed some light on the technical and artistic background of the workshop that produced them. Chapters discuss techniques of construction, the statues themselves which represent a gigantomachy, the bases and supports as well as the roof system, and the workshop.
